It is common for many patients to feel nervous or anxious about their dental procedures. Dr. Campfield has advanced training in ways to help with your anxiety and to make you feel more comfortable. A more relaxed patient is often able to receive more treatment and complete more dentistry in a single visit. During dental and oral surgical procedures local anesthesia is administered to block sensations. Anxiety is controlled by administering sedative drugs to induce "conscious sedation" in which the patient achieves a relaxed state during treatment, but can respond to speech or touch. A sedated patient may remember the procedures, but will be more relaxed. A consciously sedated patient is capable of response to commands and has all protective refleses intact, including the ability to clear and maintain his or her own airway. In conscious sedation, senses are dulled, not eliminated. You may have varying levels of awareness. Each dental patient's response to conscious sedation is individual, some responding more favorable than others. Every attempt will be made to optimize the experience. |
